History of the lichtjesroute
It began in 1945 when citizens of Eindhoven placed candles and light bulbs to commemorate their liberation after World War II. But it was not until 1984 that the current lichtjesroute became an annual event. Since then, volunteers spend countless hours setting up the light displays each year and it is estimated that 200,000 people tour the route each year.
Hundreds of thousands of light bulbs, LED's and gas-discharge lamps are used for the 22-kilometre route, which is entirely on public roads so that it can be enjoyed by all, for free. Walk the route, drive the route or bike the route. Aside from enjoying the lights, participants also get a tour of the city of Eindhoven.
The organization estimates that bicycling the route in its entirety will take about two hours (three hours with children). For those who prefer to walk the route, it is recommended that you do the six-hour route in two stages. There is also a bus tour organized by VVV Eindhoven (Tel 0900-1122363).
The light displays range from the PSV Football team, to the Evoluon, a windmill and Nijntje. If it is from Eindhoven - or Dutch - then there is probably a light display for it on the lichtjesroute! The lamps will be lit on 18 September and will be put out at 22:00 on 10 October. The displays will be on from 19:00-23:00.
