Dutch people do not really go to a coffee shop to have just a coffee. Of course, coffee shops do sell coffee but in fact, these are cannabis coffee shops where the sale of cannabis and hashish for personal consumption by the public is tolerated by the local authorities. When you are 18 years or older, you can buy ready-made joints or some stuff to make your own.
It is not a problem to go into a coffee shop; you will find all kinds of people there sitting around in a friendly ambiance. It is quite normal to ask a police officer where you can find a coffee shop; he/she will show you the way to the nearest one. Using soft drugs is not forbidden, but dealing most certainly is!
